Philanthropist Spotlight: Monica Gibbs

Name: Monica Gibbs (she/her)

Hometown: Pamlico County, NC

How did your philanthropy story get started?

Several years ago I was office manager of a small non profit where I first learned how to plan annual philanthropy events. I also served on an all women’s economic empowerment board whose primary role was to raise funds and develop philanthropic strategy for the non profit that we represented. I am now the chair of a development committee for a statewide organization and I represent North Carolina on Cypress’s movement committee.

What does philanthropy mean to you?

To me philanthropy is expressing service and generosity by giving financial gifts or contributions.

How do you support your community?

Philanthropy wise, I support my community by connecting others with funding resources. I provide services such as writing proposals and grants. I also recommend groups whose work is deserving of receiving funding. I definitely hope to expand into other areas of philanthropy.

How can others get involved and give?

I always encourage others to find community groups that have missions that they are passionate about and share their expertise. If you can’t give money there is almost always another way that you can serve and make a huge difference. When organizations have what they need structure wise, philanthropy has a promising chance to develop.
