GRANTMAKING OVERVIEW

Cypress Fund’s grantmaking is advised by community organizers and social justice leaders and is distributed through several vehicles:

The vast majority of our grantmaking is given from a pool of funds that is raised from our individual and institutional philanthropic donors. We distribute grants from this pool of funds in several ways. We strive to provide multi-year, general operating support to grassroots community groups through grants from our Movement Infrastructure Fund. Additionally, Cypress Fund distributes rapid response grants from our Interdependence and Solidarity Fund, which specifically moves resources to groups with urgent needs. All of the decisions for these grants are decided by our Movement Committee, which consists of a team of social justice organizers from across North and South Carolina.

Finally, we make a small portion of grants through our annual Giving Project – our mechanism for organizing grassroots donors in the Carolinas. These grants are selected by Giving Project participants through a democratic grantmaking process, while our Movement Committee also weighs in on the focus of each Giving Project.
